Marriage, Undefended

Shona Bridge

Last night’s rain pools on the garden pavers.
The morning is warm. The water on the path
is bright glass: a mirror for the parrots
in the flame tree. A mirror for us, too.
We’ve come so far. You used to shove your weight
against my door. Now, this same cedar door
opens to you.
Some days frighten me: Everything I touch
is a splinter searching for skin.
I think there’s a reason we have each other—
we might as well trick ourselves into delight.

Shona Bridge is a poet living on Darkinjung land in Australia.
